Why Copilot is better than Gemini (for now)
Disclaimer: This article heavily relies on personal experiences with the two AI models
Lately, Google Gemini has been lacking when compared to its rival Microsoft's AI offering, Copilot. Copilot has received some sweet new updates which were enough to prove us wrong regarding its competency.
If you've been to busy to catch up with the hectic AI race between these two giants, don't worry, I haven't been hitting the news lately too., but based on my usage, I'm confident that I'll make this showoff between these AI models as unbiased and accurate as possible...
So let's jump right into it:
PRESENTATION MATTERS
When it comes to end user products, presentation is key. Have you noticed the native Android apps of Gemini and Copilot lately? Copilot offers up a lot of new ways to use AI right out of the bat on the homescreen, while Gemini's app is just a copy of the web version, both of which are merely chat windows. No/ only meagre inspirations or suggestions can be found there.
Copilot also has a daily news feed which wins it extra points.
Hence, even though Gemini and Copilot have almost the same capabilities, Copilot does a better job showcasing them to the user right out of the box.
HOW SAFE IS 'TOO SAFE"?
In my limited testing, I noticed that Gemini is too far into its comfort zone. Gemini, imo is playing it safe and misses the mark when it comes to casual banter with the user. It's tone is almost repetitive compared to Copilot. As a Gemini fanboy, it comes as a disappointment that Google is playing it too safe with Gemini. To the point that it's too boring. Google needs to update Gemini's conversation to match the user's enthusiasm, and not make the user's get hit with a "I'm just a language model" or "I'm not allowed to do that"...you know what I mean. I hope!
INACCURACIES
While inaccurate responses and hallucinations are still a common trait shared by both the models, Gemini seemed to succumb to it more, sadly. ChatGPT 4-o (the free version atleast) was way worse than Gemini, actually. It completely mixed up the characters of 'The Sea Sisters',a novel by Lucy Clarke. Both ChatGPT and Gemini relentlessly hammered some fabricated details of the story, changing the general premise in a big way. I'm yet to give rigorous tests to Copilot, but coppy has started off solid.
Conclusion:
My observations could be totally wrong, and I expect it to be after Gemini updates and beats Copilot. Till that time, all we can do is complain. Though, kudos to Microsoft for emerging as the biggest player in AI on the field right now.
Cheers.
